Summary:
Thank you so much to my fellow housewives for joining me today in class!
We complained about the weather together, as it was a hot day today. And after one student reminded us that the rainy season is coming, I panicked and started worrying about all the insects coming out! We talked about centipedes (mukade). The word centipede looks quite difficult, but it’s a simple combination of two words that you might already know. ‘Centi’ is the Latin word that “century” (100 years) and “centimeter” (1/100th of a meter) comes from. From there, you can guess that ‘centi’ means “hundred“. ‘Pede’ is the Latin word that “pedal” (where you put your foot on a bicycle) and “pedometer” (manpo-kei) comes from. So ‘pede’ means foot (ashi), or having a foot .
Centipedes are quite horrible creatures, since they can bite people, but at least we can study their name to learn a few more things about English!
We also talked about special Japanese foods, such as konnyaku and natto. Natto is an acquired taste, just like whiskey, blue cheese, dark chocolate and other exotic foods from all over the world. People usually don’t like the taste and smell of blue cheese when they first try it out. But for some people, if they keep on trying and eating blue cheese, they slowly learn to appreciate the taste and flavor. They acquire (obtain/get/learn) the good taste of the food item. If you describe something as an acquired taste, you mean that a lot of people do not like it when they first experience it, but often start to like it more when they get to know it better*.
You can also use the term ‘acquired taste‘ for many other things, such as people (their character/appearance), music and other forms of art.
Thank you once again for joining me today! Have a great weekend ahead.
